Advance Nav-Tara System
The Nav Tara Chakra (NVTC): a nine-fold reading of how every nakshatra relates to your Janma Nakshatra, used for friendship, finance, timing, muhurat and event analysis.
Introduction to the Nav-Tara System
“Tara” means star. In Jyotish, the 27 nakshatras are counted from the Janma Nakshatra (the nakshatra of the natal Moon) and grouped into nine Taras. Each Tara describes the quality of the relationship between you and the star in question: wealth, danger, wellbeing, obstacle, achievement, loss or friendship.
Because the 27 nakshatras divide into three cycles of nine, each Tara appears three times in the Chakra. The system is used with the Moon’s nakshatra for people and names, and with the nakshatra of any planet, house lord, dasha lord or transiting body for timing.
Importance of Nav Tara Chakra
- Fast, simple, and uses only the Janma Nakshatra, so it works even when the birth time is uncertain.
- Gives a friendly or hostile reading for people, numbers, names, places and dates.
- Connects naturally with Vimshottari dasha, transits (Gochar), Tara Bala in muhurat, and Tara Milan in marriage matching.
How to make the Nav Tara Chakra
- Find the natal Moon’s nakshatra. This is Tara 1, the Janma Tara.
- Write the nakshatras in order from it: Janma = 1, next = 2, up to 27.
- Group them in three rows of nine: 1–9, 10–18, 19–27.
- Name each column by its position: 1 Janam, 2 Sampat, 3 Vipat, 4 Kshema, 5 Pratyari, 6 Sadhak, 7 Vadha, 8 Mitra, 9 Ati Mitra.

The Nine Taras
Traditionally Janam, Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha are treated with caution, and Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak, Mitra and Ati Mitra as favourable. The sections below show why this is only a starting point.
Special Taras (Karma, Vinashak and More)
Besides the nine Taras, classical texts name special positions counted from the Janma Nakshatra. Lists differ between texts, so treat names and counts below as the commonly cited set.
| Name | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Janma | 1 | Self, body, birth; sensitive for health and surgery. |
| Karma | 10 | Profession and deeds; good for career action, with the star’s lord colouring the result. |
| Sanghatika | 16 | Groups, associations; mental strain or team ties. |
| Samudayika | 18 | Crowds and collective matters; avoid for personal beginnings. |
| Adhana | 19 | Conception, deep transformation, sudden changes. |
| Vinashak (Vainashika) | 22 | Destruction, loss, obstruction; avoid starting important work. |
| Manasa | 25 | Mind and emotions; mental unrest. |
| Abhisheka | 27 | Completion and consecration; a closing, culminating star. |
Lagna Tara and its use
Take the nakshatra of the Lagna (and the Lagna lord) and count its Tara from the Janma Nakshatra. A Lagna in a Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak or Mitra star supports confidence, health and public life. A Lagna in Vipat, Pratyari or Vadha shows effort-heavy years unless the Janma Tara or dasha lord supports it. Judge Lagna Tara together with Moon Tara, never alone.
Applying the Taras in a Kundli
Reading the Janam Tara in a kundli
The Janma Nakshatra is the base of the whole system. Its lord, its pada, the sign of the Moon and the strength of the Moon decide how well the person handles every other Tara. A strong, well-placed Moon softens harsh Taras; a weak or afflicted Moon sharpens them.
Connection of the Janam Tara with other Taras
- Taras 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 are supportive of Janma; 3, 5, 7 test it.
- The three Janma stars (1, 10, 19) share the Janma lord’s nature, so planets there act like “self” planets.
- Planets placed in friendly Taras give their results comfortably; planets in Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha stars give results with delay, opposition or a cost.
Make a kundli of Nav Tara Chakra
Place each planet and the Lagna in its nakshatra, count its Tara, and write it beside the planet. Mark good and bad Taras in two colours and list the houses each planet owns. This “Tara kundli” shows at a glance which planets and houses you can rely on and which need effort or remedy.
Dasha and Transit in the Nav Tara System
Dasha system
Find the Tara of the nakshatra in which the Mahadasha lord and Antardasha lord sit. Favourable Tara plus a well-placed lord gives gains in the house matters it rules. A harsh Tara on a strong lord still delivers, but through struggle.
| Lords in order | Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 | Total 120 |
Transit on the Nav Tara Chakra
Place the Moon (daily), and slower planets (months or years), on the Chakra by their transit nakshatra. A transiting planet in Janma, Vipat, Pratyari or Vadha Tara raises its themes in a testing way; in Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak, Mitra or Ati Mitra it supports. Saturn and Jupiter transits carry the greatest weight.
Connection of dasha with transit
The dasha shows what is promised and the transit shows when. Best time: a favourable dasha lord Tara together with transiting Jupiter or the Moon in a favourable Tara. Worst time: a harsh dasha lord Tara together with Saturn or Rahu in Vipat, Pratyari or Vadha Tara.
Checking the Status and Promise of an Event
- Pick the event and its house (for example marriage: 7th; career: 10th; finance: 2nd and 11th; education: 4th and 5th; travel: 3rd, 9th, 12th).
- Take the house, its lord and its karaka. Find each one’s nakshatra and count its Tara from the Janma Nakshatra.
- Mostly favourable Taras: the event is promised and flows. Mostly harsh Taras: delay, obstacles or a cost.
- Check the dasha lord’s Tara for the period of the event.
- Check the transit Tara of Jupiter and Saturn at the time.
How to calculate the future of an event
Find the dasha and antardasha whose lords connect to the event house. Within them, pick months where Jupiter and the Moon transit favourable Taras and avoid Saturn, Mars and Rahu on harsh Taras. That window is the likely time.
Best dasha for gain
The best dasha is of a planet that (a) owns or aspects the 2nd, 5th, 9th or 11th house, (b) sits in a Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak, Mitra or Ati Mitra star and (c) is not weak in strength. Sampat and Ati Mitra stars are the strongest for money.
Worst time as per Nav Tara
The most difficult periods combine a Vadha, Vipat or Pratyari dasha lord, a Janma-nakshatra Saturn transit and a Vinashak (22nd) star activated by a malefic.
| Area | Look at | Favourable Taras |
|---|---|---|
| Health | Lagna, 6th lord, Moon | Kshema, Sampat, Mitra |
| Finance | 2nd, 11th lords, Jupiter | Sampat, Ati Mitra, Mitra |
| Travel | 3rd, 9th, 12th lords | Kshema, Sadhak |
| Education | 4th, 5th lords, Mercury | Sadhak, Sampat |
| Home | 4th lord, Moon | Kshema, Mitra |
| Love, marriage, partnership | 5th, 7th lords, Venus | Mitra, Ati Mitra, Sampat |
| Sadhana | 9th, 12th lords, Ketu | Sadhak, Kshema |
| Illness, problems | 6th, 8th lords | Check for Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha |
| Profession | 10th lord, Karma Tara (10) | Sadhak, Sampat |
Balancing the Harsh Taras and Common Myths
How to balance Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha Tara
- Check the strength of the star’s lord: a strong, well-placed lord reduces harm.
- See if the star’s lord is friendly to the Moon’s lord.
- Use the Anu-Tara (second count from the Tara group): a harsh Tara followed by a good one balances out.
- Look at the pada and the sign: some pada of a harsh star fall in a friendly navamsha.
- Do the remedies under “Remedies” below.
Myths about Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha Tara
- “Vadha means death.” No. It indicates obstruction or loss in the matter concerned and is not a prediction of death.
- “Never act in these Taras.” Harsh Taras are unfavourable for starting, not for finishing or for defence. Pratyari can help in competition and Vadha can help remove enemies.
- “Good Tara means guaranteed success.” A strong Tara needs a strong planet, a supportive dasha and good transit.
- “Friends and partners must be Ati Mitra.” Counting both ways, a good Tara in at least one direction with no Vadha in either direction is generally workable.
Uses of the Nav Tara System
KP, Vastu, Vedic Fundamentals and Remedies
KP astrology connection
In KP, the star lord (nakshatra lord) of a cusp or significator decides the result. Apply Nav Tara by counting the Tara of the cusp sub-lord’s and star lord’s nakshatras from the Janma Nakshatra: a sub-lord in a favourable Tara delivers the event comfortably.
Vastu connection
Map the nakshatra of the house name, door direction ruler or plot owner’s name to the owner’s Janma Nakshatra. Favourable Taras suggest harmony between the owner and the property; harsh Taras suggest the need for corrective Vastu and remedies.
Importance of Vedic fundamentals
Nav Tara works best with the base rules: planetary strength, house lordship, dignity, aspects and dasha. It refines the result of a chart; it does not replace chart analysis.
Nakshatra remedies and colour therapy
| Tara | Remedy approach |
|---|---|
| Janam | Worship the nakshatra deity, keep the Janma lord’s mantra, care for health. |
| Vipat | Donate grains or clothes on the star’s day; mantra of the star’s lord. |
| Pratyari | Charity of black sesame and oil; avoid arguments and rivalry. |
| Vadha | Mantra such as Mahamrityunjaya, protective rituals, feed the needy. |
| Good Taras | Keep gratitude practices and use them for important starts. |
For colour therapy, wear or surround yourself with the colour of the planet that rules the Tara’s nakshatra: Sun red or orange, Moon white, Mars red, Mercury green, Jupiter yellow, Venus white or pastel, Saturn dark blue, Rahu smoky grey, Ketu multicolour or brown.
Relations and selections
For selecting any relation, count both ways and favour Sampat, Kshema, Sadhak, Mitra and Ati Mitra. If one direction is harsh, the person who stands in the better Tara tends to be the giver and the other the receiver.
