Philosophy & History

The Origins

Jin Shin Jyutsu dates back thousands of years in Japan, where it was passed down orally from generation to generation. The art fell into relative obscurity until the early 1900s when Master Jiro Murai rediscovered and systematized it after healing himself from a life-threatening illness.

Born into a family of physicians, Murai dedicated his life to studying energy pathways in the body. On the verge of death, he retreated to a mountain and practiced meditation and hand positions he had observed in ancient texts and temple statues. On the seventh day, he experienced complete healing and devoted the rest of his life to refining Jin Shin Jyutsu.

Introduction to the West

In the late 1940s, Mary Burmeister studied under Master Murai in Japan for 12 years. She brought this profound healing art to the Western world in the 1960s, establishing Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. and teaching thousands of practitioners worldwide.

The Holistic Approach

Unlike conventional medicine that treats symptoms, Jin Shin Jyutsu works on the entire Mind, Body, and Spirit connection to restore natural harmony. It recognizes that:

  • All illness stems from energy blockages
  • The body has innate wisdom and healing capacity
  • Energy flows through specific pathways (meridians)
  • Blockages in these pathways lead to discomfort and disease
  • Restoring energy flow promotes healing at all levels

Core Principles

✅ The Jumper Cable Concept

Your hands act as "jumper cables" to jump-start the flow of energy in the body. Just as jumper cables can revive a dead car battery, your hands can restore depleted or blocked energy pathways.

✅ The Flow of Life Energy

The body contains pathways that supply life energy to all cells. Daily stresses—physical, mental, and emotional—disrupt this flow, similar to how stones block a stream's water flow. This causes discomfort and illness.

Jin Shin Jyutsu aims to remove these "stones" to restore the natural current of life energy.

✅ Universal Energy

Jin Shin Jyutsu recognizes that we are all connected to universal energy. This life force is known by many names across cultures:

  • Ki (Japanese)
  • Chi or Qi (Chinese)
  • Prana (Hindu/Sanskrit)
  • Pneuma (Greek)

✅ The Five Depths

Energy exists at five different densities or frequencies in the body, from the surface (skin) to the deepest level (bone marrow). Understanding these depths allows for more targeted healing.

🖐️ The Five Finger Holds

One of the simplest and most powerful self-help tools in Jin Shin Jyutsu is finger holding. Each finger corresponds to specific emotions and organ functions. Hold each finger for 2-5 minutes daily to harmonize your entire being.

👍 Thumb

Worry & Anxiety

Organs: Stomach & Spleen

Benefits: Relieves worry, stomach discomfort, headaches, and skin problems. Promotes digestion.

☝️ Index Finger

Fear

Organs: Kidney & Bladder

Benefits: Addresses all types of fear (flying, exams, public speaking). Helps with muscle tension, toothaches, and back pain.

🖕 Middle Finger

Anger & Frustration

Organs: Liver & Gallbladder

Benefits: Manages anger, frustration, and indecisiveness. Supports eye health and general harmonizing.

💍 Ring Finger

Sadness & Grief

Organs: Lung & Large Intestine

Benefits: Helps with grief, sadness, and respiratory issues. Supports breathing and letting go.

🤙 Little Finger

"Trying To" (Effort/Struggle)

Organs: Heart & Small Intestine

Benefits: Releases the struggle of "trying too hard." Helps with heart health, nervousness, and insecurity.

How to Hold Your Fingers

  1. Gently wrap one hand around the finger you wish to hold
  2. Hold for 2-5 minutes (or until you feel a pulse synchronization)
  3. Breathe naturally and relax
  4. You can hold the same finger on both hands, or alternate
  5. Practice daily for best results

🔒 The 26 Safety Energy Locks (SELs)

Safety Energy Locks are concentrated spheres of energy located throughout the body. There are 26 on each side (left and right), making 52 in total. These locks are approximately the size of a tennis ball in three-dimensional space.

When energy pathways become blocked, these locks serve as warning points. By applying gentle touch to these areas, we can release blockages and restore harmony.

The Significance of 26

Each number from 1 to 26 came into the universe with a definite individual meaning and purpose. The number 26 means COMPLETE—indicating we have everything we need within us to heal and maintain balance.

⚡ The Trinity Flows (Vital Flows)

The Trinity Flows are three primary energy pathways that feed the entire system. These are foundational to all Jin Shin Jyutsu practice.

1. The Main Central Vertical Flow

This is the source of our life force that runs down the center of the body, from the top of the head to the base of the spine and pubic bone.

Benefits: Helps with everything—spinal issues, digestion, hormones, mental clarity, and emotional balance. This flow harmonizes mind, body, and spirit.

Practice: Place hands on specific points along the body's centerline, holding each position for 2-5 minutes.

2. The Supervisor Flows

Left and Right flows that oversee the body's structure and help digest life experiences.

Benefits: Support skeletal structure, muscle function, and help process both physical and emotional experiences.

3. The Mediator Flows

Energy that crisscrosses the body, harmonizing left and right sides.

Benefits: Brings balance between masculine and feminine energies, coordinates both sides of the body, and helps with emotional regulation.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jin Shin Jyutsu safe for everyone?

Yes! Jin Shin Jyutsu is completely safe and non-invasive. It can be practiced by people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. Because it involves only gentle touch over clothing, there are no contraindications.

How is JSJ different from acupuncture or massage?

Unlike acupuncture, Jin Shin Jyutsu uses no needles. Unlike massage, it requires no pressure, manipulation, or removal of clothing. JSJ uses only light touch (the weight of a nickel) over specific points to redirect and harmonize energy flow.

Do I need to believe in energy for it to work?

No. Jin Shin Jyutsu works regardless of your beliefs. Many skeptics have experienced profound benefits simply by trying the techniques. The energy flows in your body are a natural phenomenon, like gravity—they work whether you believe in them or not.

How long does it take to see results?

Some people experience immediate relaxation and relief, while others notice gradual improvements over time. For chronic conditions, regular practice over weeks or months may be needed. Even a single session can provide deep relaxation and stress relief.

Can I practice on myself?

Absolutely! Self-help is a cornerstone of Jin Shin Jyutsu. Simple techniques like finger holds can be done anywhere, anytime. More complex sequences can also be self-applied with practice.

How long should I hold each position?

Generally, hold each position for 2-5 minutes, or until you feel a pulsation synchronize under both hands. Your body will tell you when it's time to move on—you may feel a sense of completion or release.

Do I need special training to practice JSJ?

For self-help and helping family/friends, you can learn from books and online resources. To become a professional practitioner, formal training through certified instructors is recommended (typically three 5-day classes).

Can JSJ replace medical treatment?

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a complement to, not a replacement for, conventional medical care. It can enhance healing and support medical treatments, but always consult with healthcare professionals for serious conditions.
